Principal's Message 12/9/18
December 9, 2018
Dear Brooks Families,
Good Afternoon! I hope you are enjoying this beautiful weekend. While it’s been chilly, it sure is nice to see the sun! An enormous thank you to our staff and families who contributed to Gift Mart. We collected 253 toys for families in need in District 204. What a wonderful way to model for our children, the joy of giving to others.
Vision & Hearing Screenings
We will soon begin State mandated vision and hearing screenings through the Brooks Health Office. All students in K through 3rd grade and selected students in grades 4 and 5 will be screened for vision and/or hearing. If your child wears glasses, please make sure they have them at school.
Vision screening is not a substitute for a complete eye and vision evaluation by an eye doctor. Your child is not required to undergo this vision screening if an optometrist or ophthalmologist has completed and signed a report indicating that an examination has been administered within the previous 12 months, and that evaluation is on file at the school. If an examination report is not on file at the school for your child, your child in the mandated age/grade/group will be screened.
If you have any questions about the screenings, please contact Mrs. Phillips in the Brooks Elementary Health Office at 630.375.3209—
Did you know that nearly 80 students were late to school, last week alone. Prompt arrival allows students to start the day with the class and complete the morning routine so they are ready to learn! Thank you for making sure your child arrives on time!
Coffee Connect Follow Up
At our recent Coffee Connect, parents asked about before and after school activities. I explained they are offered in 3 ways:
Teacher generated activities
Third Party (outside providers who rent our space within the building)
Parent generated idea that gets “sponsored” by PTA
Parents asked for a “summary” of activities provided by the school. On the link below, you will find a tentative summary of activities that have been or will be offered this year. If you have questions regarding any of the activities, the sponsor is listed. Thank you to our families who expressed an interest in facilitating an activity. That information was provided to our PTA.

Climate Survey - We Need Your Feedback
Parents, students and teachers across Illinois will once again have an opportunity to participate in the annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of your child’s school as it relates to the important elements of school effectiveness.
On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be administered online by the University of Chicago. All survey responses will be kept confidential. The state will provide survey results for individual schools only if a school has at least 20 percent of parents take the survey. If you have children attending more than one school, we ask that you complete the survey for each school.
To take this short survey:
1. Visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/
2. Type and select “Dupage” as "County." (The county is the location of the school district's main office.)
3. Type your school's name into the "School" field and select your school.
The Illinois 5Essentials Survey identifies five indicators that can lead to important student outcomes, including test score gains. Research has shown that schools strong on these indicators are ten times more likely to improve student learning. The five indicators that affect school success are effective leaders, collaborative teachers, involved families, supportive environments, and ambitious instruction.
Parents will have until January to participate in the survey.
As the weather shifts to winter, it’s important to make sure our students are prepared for the cold temperatures. Please make sure your child wears a coat to school and has hats/gloves/boots available when needed. As per district policy, our students will go out for a short recess if the temperature and/or wind chill is above 5 degrees and the playground conditions are acceptable. If your family needs assistance with warm winter wear, please call or email me (630-375-3200 or email@example.com). Your call will be confidential and your child’s needs will be met.
This is the time of year when many of our families take extended vacations. Please contact the school office at 630-375-3200 x3 to report your child’s absence. Please keep in mind, as per district policy, homework will not be provided in advance. When your child returns, the necessary work, along with a reasonable “make-up timeframe” will be given. Thank you for your understanding.
