Principal's Message 2/1/20

Reported by on 2/1/20

Dear Brooks Families,

Happy Super Bowl Weekend! Along with game day, it appears we may actually get a glimpse of the sun! There are no significant updates in this week’s message, but thank you for a quick review!

An enormous thank you goes to Bridget and Don Palmer and all the volunteers for coordinating the popular Bingo Night! These events provide a wonderful opportunity to bring our community together!

As you know, three times per year, our students participate in benchmarking assessments that are “dipstick” measures of student performance in the areas of reading and math. We have recently completed Winter benchmarking. Over the next week, we will hold staff data reviews— reviewing this data along with a plethora of other assessment data. We use this information to determine instructional groups, both within the classroom and for pull out services. If your child is new to pull out service this winter, you will be informed via letter, no later than February 4.

Last Call for Yearbooks
You were given the opportunity to order Brooks yearbooks when ordering your child’s fall picture package. We are giving you one last chance to order a yearbook if you choose. The deadline to order the 2019-2020 yearbook is February 13, 2020. Order forms are in the office.

Classroom Valentine Exchange - Feb. 14
On February 14, our students will participate in a teacher planned Valentine Exchange. I know
many of you may already be purchasing Valentine cards. If so, please review the following guidelines.

1. If your child chooses to participate, he/she should include a Valentine for EVERY classmate. No child should be left out.
2. Due to food allergies and health needs, we highly recommend a CARD ONLY. However, we recognize that many Valentines now come with candy as part of the card (in other words, a lollipop or candy heart). You may send those valentines with your child. If you choose to attach something to your card, please consider a NON-EDIBLE treat such as a pencil, eraser or Valentine sticker/tattoo.
3. NO peanut products, homemade goods or goodie bags are allowed
4. ALL Valentines will be collected in a collection box/bag and sent home. NO CANDY will be eaten at school.

Celebrating our Diversity
Brooks is a diverse and interesting place full of many different languages and cultures. In an effort to celebrate our differences, we are inviting students to welcome one another on the morning announcements in their home language. All students who participate will be asked to introduce themselves and say (in the home language):

——"Good Morning Brooks Tigers. Let's make it a great day!"

If your oldest or only child is interested in participating, please fill out the attached survey so that we can begin to schedule the morning welcomes at:

Furry Fridays
Brooks Elementary is excited to continue Furry Fridays in partnership with the Naperville Humane Society and the PAWS for Tales Reading Program will begin at the end of September!

Each Friday a certified therapy dog will visit our school and students will be invited by their teacher to read to the dog! Our furry friends are Zoey, Cubbie and Wrigley and they will be at Brooks on alternating Fridays beginning September 20.

In order for your child to have the opportunity to participate, the Naperville Humane Society requires that you sign the release form linked below. Please just let your teacher know if your child should absolutely NOT participate (allergies, fear of dogs, etc).
