First Grade

Aesop’s Fables

Students study several fables, become familiar with the elements, and write an original fable.

Bloomin’ Books

Through selections of classic children’s literature, students examine story structure and learn to develop questions based on Benjamin Bloom’s taxonomy that lead to higher level thinking.

Math Problem Solving

Real-life application of math skills using a variety of strategies.

Constructions

Hands on activities that teach graphing coordinates and concepts of measurement.

Second Grade

Introduction to Economics

Economic decision-making is studied and practiced through simulation activities.

Create A Character

Students develop a complete history for an original character, then write a speech and present it dressed as the character.

Creative Problem Solving

Students apply creative thinking to develop unique solutions for the problems encountered in every day life.

Bloomin’ Books

Using a variety of children's literature, the art of questioning is developed further to promote higher-level thinking.

Entomology

The study of insects: their adaptations, defenses, life cycles and role in a heathly ecosystem.

Third Grade

Creativity

Poetry, posters and packets help students develop fluency, flexibility, elaboration and originality.

Rhyme Time

Students enjoy revisiting old favorite nursery rhymes from Mother Goose. Student creativity is fostered through exercises in development of original verse, transmogrifying rhymes, and composition of symbolic representations.

Journalism

Students learn interviewing, writing, editing and newspaper production.

Geometric Explorations

Students create nets that are then built into closed shapes. The hands-on nature of these activities help students to develop spatial abilities.

Creative Problem Solving

Students brainstorm and evaluate ideas to determine solutions.

Economics

Students learn about trade offs, supply, demand, and other considerations in economic decisions.

Fourth Grade

The Brain

Topics include the anatomy and physiology of the brain, learning styles, and multiple-intelligence theories.

Etymology

Students learn that Greek and Latin are the basis of most of our common language. Educational games help students learn the meanings of root words, affixes, and combinations.

Voyage of the Mimi

Students join a crew of scientists sailing on a ship off the coast of New England in pursuit of information about humpback whales. Oceanography and marine biology are studied.

Fifth Grade

Economics / Stock Market

Students learn about economics through simulations including participation in an activity called The Stock Market Game. Working in teams, students invest a hypothetical $100,000 and make decisions to buy, sell, or hold over a three-month period. Each student chooses one company for an in-depth study, and presents the research project to the class.

Second Voyage of the Mimi

Students follow the Mimi crew as it travels on adventures throughout Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. Maya culture and archeology are studied.

Enrichment at All Grade Levels

Areas of focus include critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, research, math skills enhanced and development of reading comprehension.   Based on needs identified by classroom teachers, activities are both individual and small group.  Projects are published or presented to class.
